Millions of Australians each year struggle with mental illness, and approximately only one third will seek help for these problems. Suicide is the leading cause of death in people aged 15-44 in Australia and the second leading cause of death in people aged 45-54 (ABS, 2016). Many of us are already aware of this and mental illness and/or suicide has touched our lives personally. Being aware, and being concerned, doesn’t change it. We need to take action. More than Awareness is a not for profit organisation that delivers evidence-based initiatives to improve mental health outcomes and contribute to suicide prevention. We take a primary prevention approach: that is, one that aims to prevent problems before they occur. Our focus is on improving physical, social and mental wellbeing for individuals, groups, workplaces and communities.
